Exhibition Opening and Celebration of Motherhood

Saturday 14th March 2015

I had the sense that my journey is not alone but is unique. It was an inspiration to activley connect and share more with other women.

60 grandparents, parents and their children came to our exhibition preview and third Celebration of Motherhood event.  Held at Knowle West Media Centre the day after our radio interviews aired on Woman's Hour , it was a lively, thought-provoking event encouraging connection between mothers. Visitors listened to live discussions on motherhood, watched a screening of digital stories created during the project, shared their stories over tea and cake and nourished themselves with holistic massage sessions and creative activities.

I found the discussion between Pippa and the two mothers very interesting and moving. The films were amazing and I felt a connection to all mums everywhere. It helps me connect with my mum in some way I can't describe

Women interacted with the exhibition by adding chains of paper dolls to the display and writing anonymous postcards to their mums.

It was a brilliant opening, very powerful, with all different women there. The attention around the audience was very impressive and there was a fantastic celebratory feel to the event. There was a multiplicity of experience, and a seriousness too, it covered a lot of different experiences.  - Carolyn Hassan, director KWMC

The afternoon ended in a powerful moment of reflection followed by a fantastic raffle, raising money for local charity 'Mothers for Mothers' who support women with post natal illness.

Exhibition Preview at Southmead Hospital

Friday 15th May 2015

It is incredibly beautiful and powerful work and it touched me in ways I hadn't expected

Our exhibition opened at Southmead hospital with an event attended by members of the public, project participants, staff from Maternity services and the Fresh Arts team. Bristol 24/7 were there and gave the show a great write up.

Lots of visitors talked to me about the work, commenting on how powerful the whole exhibition was, what it provoked in them and how refreshing it was to see such work in a hospital environment.  - Ruth Sidgwick, Fresh Arts Manager

Celebration of Motherhood

March 2014

35 mum's gathered on the Saturday before Mothering Sunday to share stories of motherhood, see films and books made during Mother in the Mother workshops and eat lots of lovely cake. Mum's also took part in creative activities including making mother's wish boxes, hand oil, creative writing, paper dolls and decorating candles. At the end we lit the candles and gave out prizes from a bountiful raffle. It was a lovely, reflective event with moments of joy and sorrow, humour and celebration.

The creative writing was moving and thought provoking, and the discussion during paper doll making was very poignant and interesting. It helped me re-connet with my ability to be a caring mother

Mums' Stories

October 2013

Our website went live at the Mum's Stories event on 8th October at Knowle West Media Centre. 20 parents and grandparents attended, along with babies and children. Together we shared stories of mothering over tea and cake and made paper stars celebrating our children and our role as parents.

Beautiful idea, so important to explore family relationships.

Hands and feet hold stories all of their own, in their lines, creases and individual form. Parents worked with their children to make plaster prints of the child's feet and hands, celebrating their unique identities and enjoying getting messy along the way.

I enjoyed being able to be here with my daughter, doing toddler clay alongside cerebral thinking about motherhood - the duality.

Mums' were introduced to the website and shown how to add their stories to the growing collection. The first person to submit a full story at the event went home with a lovely gift set from Neal's Yard Remedies.

The best part was having the chance to write (something I really enjoy) while someone looked after my baby!

Celebration of Motherhood

March 2013

The project was launched with a celebration of mothering held on the weekend of Mothering Sunday at Yanley Court, Bristol.

Mothers brought flowers along to create a collective bunch for the day, shared traditional simnel cake, took part in a group discussion, made paper dolls and created beautiful decorated candles. We ended the day by lighting the candles as a way of celebrating our mothers, and our own role as mothers.

I took my mum...we'd never have talked so candidly like this at home. The group allowed us the space to voice things that had previously been unspoken. It was powerfull stuff!
